Geography

Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?

Michael Palin

At Garden Fields we aim to provide a highly skills-based Geography education. Children will be inspired and curious about the world around them and taught the skills to investigate and deepen their knowledge. These skills are taught in a progressive way across the school to enable the children to further their skill sets each year.

You can find out more in our 3 Is; Intent, Implementation and Impact.

Intent

At Garden Fields we aim to provide a highly skills-based Geography education. Children will be inspired and curious about the world around them and taught the skills to investigate and deepen their knowledge. These skills are taught in a progressive way across the school to enable the children to further their skill sets each year. Children will be given opportunity to apply these skills in geographical enquiries and investigation. Focus will be placed on both the children’s immediate geographical location and the wider world. Knowledge taught will include both the Earth’s human and physical geography and children will understand their place and influence within the world.

Implementation

  • Geography is taught as part of a larger topic to allow the children to make cross curricular links to further their understanding. This is done through the use of Curriculum Maestro topics.
  • Each unit begins with sharing a knowledge organiser with the children. This document outlines the skills, knowledge and language that will be gained through the unit in order to allow the children to see their individual learning journey.
  • Skills planning takes clear account of previous learning to enable all skills to progress and deepen through the school years.
  • Children are given opportunities to use their enquiry skills to investigate concepts further.
  • Lessons are taught taking into account all learning styles and are as practical as possible to allow equal access for all.
  • Opportunities are given for cross curricular outcomes, including opportunities for longer pieces of writing and improvement of oracy skills through presentations.
  • Field work will play a part in the local geographical study, including opportunities to visit local places of interest.
  • Children will be encouraged to think on a deeper level about the world around them and how this is changing and evolving over time.
  • Opportunities for assessment will take place at numerous points during the topic to allow further lessons to reflect the needs of the children. This assessment will be completed in various methods such as discussion, quizzes and written tasks.
